Bill Fawley
Liverpool Closed
Eleven club members took part in the Bill Fawley Liverpool Closed Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Liverpool & District Table Tennis League over the weekend of the 10/11 May 2026, and four of those members made it through to Finals Night, held at Crosby High School on Wednesday 13 May. The quality of play may not quite have matched up to that seen over the weekend at the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships, but there was no doubt that on Finals Night the crowd present enjoyed a real feast of the best in local table tennis. Full results of all events can be found on the Liverpool League website (BILL FAWLEY LIVERPOOL CLOSED 2026 - FINAL'S NIGHT RESULTS | Liverpool and District Table Tennis League | TT Leagues

Finals Night Events
Finals Night featured 6 events and club members appeared in 3 of them!
In the Ladies Singles, former champion Clare Peers, seeded No.1, who has won the title multiple times in the past, faced club mate Tereza Kopfova, herself perhaps a surprise challenger for the title even though she was seeded at No.2. What a terrific match this was. Unexpectedly Clare seemed to show slight signs of nerves whereas Tereza simply had nothing to loose. Tereza took the first game by the narrowest of margins, Clare fought back seemingly making light work of the second. Tereza however, got herself together and scrapped for every point in the third again taking it by the narrowest margin. The fourth end was a real see-saw with both players slightly on edge but in the end it was Tereza who showed the coolest nerve when the game went to deuce coming through to take the game, the set and the Ladies title. What a match!

Finals Night Events
First Team Captain, Colin Turner and fellow Div 1 colleague, Matthew Wilson, both had an excellent tournament. They combined brilliantly in the open doubles reaching the final with an exceptional win over the pairing of Lawrence Kenwright and Matthew Laird from Crosby High. In the final they found themselves facing another pairing from Crosby High, in the form of two very strong and up and coming young men, Rowan Kumar & Joseph Ilia, who have each only played a handful of matches in the Liverpool League over the past season. This was a final of top class 1st division table tennis featuring contrasting styles, but it was the attacking flare of the two younger players that triumphed after a very keenly contested match.
Matthew also featured in the final of the O40's Singles where he faced Neil Pickard one of the league's regular top players. Again a match of contrasting styles and once more it was attack that won out after a nervy first game from Neil. Both Matthew and Colin also featured in the semi-finals of the O55's Singles although neither got through to the final in that event.
Two excellent matches with top quality table tennis in each.
