It's Over!
The last of the Club's teams in any cup competition of the 2019/20 season of the Liverpool & District Table Tennis League was in action this week. The Bath Street Marine D Team, captained by the legendary Brian Crolley, faced the divisional leaders in the Division 3 Divisional Cup Semi-Final.
Late Change
Due to an unexpected and late change to the match day Captain Brian found that he was without his right hand man and arguably best player, Mal Kent, for the match. And I am assured that had nothing to do with the fact that Liverpool FC were also at home on the match night! Fortunately, Brian was able to find a very adequate substitute in the form of Colin Mitchell, playing up from his normal Div 4 team.
The BSM team faced a very strong Waterloo line-up, featuring the seasoned campaigner Dave Evans - himself a former Div 1 player - and two very strong and rising junior stars, Sean Chandler and Nathan Jago. As the score card shows, the match started reasonably well with the second set a very close encounter. However, when the second set slipped away in the 5th end it looked as if there was little way back. Two more heavy losses followed. BSM No.1 Andy Cheung did his best to make the match look respectable in the fifth set, but again narrowly lost out in the 5th end, giving the home side a comprehensive 5:0 victory. A good cup run for the D Team, but the end of the road at the semi's.
