A Feast of Friendlies!

Following from the success of the recent Marine Mini Summer League, its organiser, Sue Young, arranged a fresh challenge, a friendly match between teams of 'social' players from BSM and Old Roan (part of the Maghull Table Tennis Club). Each club organised 4 teams of 3 players per team. With the broad aim of matching standards of players in each match. Each match involved 9 sets of singles so that each player played all of the players of the opposing team. Every set being 3 games, with 1 point awarded for each game won. This meant that in an evening of table tennis there were 108 games played! What a feast of table tennis.

The Action - BSM Team A

All of the teams played their matches simultaneously. On Table 1, BSM A were in action. Their line-up the very strong combination of Mark Evans, Billy Smith & Bob Wolstenholme. They faced very strong opposition in the form of Salih Erbil, Dave Hoey and John Rigby. And what a match it proved to be. Salih was the star player winning 8 out of 9 games. With Mark being the best player for BSM winning two out of 3 matches. The final score being 16:11 in favour of Old Roan.

The Action - BSM Team B

On Table 2, BSM B were the opposition. Their line-up being Liz Neild, Bobby Blair and Sue Young. With Liz & Bobby being in the team that had won the MMSL they were bidding to continue this run of success. Once again, Liz showed the extent by which she has improved her table tennis over the last 12 months. Winning 8 out of 9 games. Richard Lau was the most successful player in this match for Old Roan taking 5 out of 8 singles games. It was another cracking match this time falling in favour of BSM 10:17.

The Action - BSM Team C

Table 3 was BSM C against their Old Roan counterparts. Tony Mitchell, Tom Bell and Mario Grabinski were the BSM trio but it was Valeril Tercanu of Old Roan who starred, winning all 9 of his singles games. With Tony and Tom responding for BSM taking two sets each. There were some excellent and close sets in this match but again the final result fell in favour of Old Roan by 18:9.

The Action - BSM Team D

BSM D were on Table 4 and included Mike Gill, Phil Corran and Doreen Smith. The outstanding player from this match was Chris Bowman, the only other player from this series of matches to win all 9 singles games, and in some style! Phil picked up two very good wins for BSM but the team struggled to add to his tally. The final score being 21:6 in favour of Old Roan.

Overall this was a successful evening of table tennis for the Old Roan players winning 3 out of 4 of the matches, but more importantly it was an excellent evening of friendly but competitive table tennis matching players of very similar standards. 24 players taking part overall and a great mix of men and women and ages! Everything that is best about table tennis.
