University Challenge - 2
It was a pleasure to welcome students from Edge Hill University to Marine this week, for a return 'University Challenge' table tennis match between the students and the club's teens.
Six students from the University took on seven teens from the club in two matches. Each match comprising of 12 sets, each set being the best of 3 games so as to fit within the time window. This meant there were plenty of games for everyone
The visitors from Edge Hill University - their names later!
BSM Teens 1 v Edge Hill 1
In the first match the top three players from the students took on the top four from the teens. In this match the teens were challenged all the way. Top player of the night was Nathan Collins from the students, who showed that he is a quality player. It turned out that he had previously played league table tennis in the region in the Wigan & Warrington areas. It seemed that he was unstoppable in the singles, but in the final set of the night he momentarily took his foot off the accelerator giving his last opponent, Shamal Harave, half a chance, which he took to become the only player to take a set from Nathan - and you can see from the score card just how close it was. It left Shamal unbeaten in his 3 sets, a very good achievement. There were good games throughout this match and some very close sets. However, at the end of the night it was the BSM teens who were ahead, the final result 19 pts to 9.

BSM Teens 2 v Edge Hill 2
The second match was a pure 3 a-side including singles and doubles. It has to be said this match was a slight mis-match! The fact is that the younger teens who played in this one are almost as good as the older boys playing in the first team, by contrast the Edge Hill squad had a couple of key players missing and were not quite the standard of their first team. Nevertheless the Edge Hill boys fought for everything, and contributed to some very good table tennis, but they were just outgunned by their opponents! It wasn't until the final doubles of the night that the Edge Hill boys snatched their first game win, enough to avoid the complete whitewash! It was a really good match played in an excellent spirit. The final result 24 points to 1!

And in conclusion.......
It was great to see the students from Edge Hill again, and to be able to enjoy a good evening of competitive table tennis. Below a few more pictures from the evening.
